What we know about Lupus
Lupus is chronic, currently incurable disease that is often misdiagnosed and very much misunderstood.  Lupus causes the immune system to attack the body's own joints, tissue and organs.  It is estimated that in Utah there are up to 20,000 plus people afflicted with Lupus, with up to 2 million afflicted nationwide.
  • 1 out of 185 Americans may be affected
  • It is 2 to 3 times more prevalent in African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians
  • 90% of those affected are women
  • There are an increasing number of children, teenagers and men being diagnosed
  • More people are affected with Lupus than Multiple Sclerosis (MS), AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy combined!

What we don't know about Lupus
The cause of Lupus is unknown.  Scientist have not found a gene connected to Lupus, but there are many families with multiple cases of Lupus.  It often takes up to 5 years (and more) to diagnose to get a correct diagnosis.

There is no single laboratory test to diagnose Lupus
There not been a new drug created to treat Lupus in over 40 years
